Signal Engineer
Position Title
Signal Engineer – Rail Transit Consultant
Apital is seeking a technically proficient and self-driven Signal Engineer with experience in both conventional and modern signaling technologies, including Solid State Interlocking (SSI). The ideal candidate will support the engineering, testing, and integration of complex signal systems for rail transit clients such as MTA, SEPTA, and Amtrak.
This is a consultant or contract-based role, ideal for professionals experienced in signal design and interlocking systems, particularly those familiar with the transition from relay-based systems to digital signaling (e.g., CBTC/SSI/ATC).
Responsibilities
- Develop, review, and interpret signal circuit designs, interlocking logic, route locking, and control tables.
- Support design, testing, and commissioning of SSI-based interlockings and related signaling equipment.
- Analyze and validate signaling application data for SSI and CBTC/ATC integration.
- Participate in interlocking design reviews with operators, system integrators, and safety teams.
- Assist in configuration and testing of control lines, approach locking, and vital circuits for wayside signal systems.
- Conduct system interface reviews between SSI, train control systems (CBTC/PTC), ATS, and Operation Control Center (OCC).
- Produce or validate signal plans, cable plans, and construction packages for capital projects.
- Support Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) with documentation and traceability.
Required Skills/ Knowledge
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Systems Engineering, or equivalent.
- 5+ years of experience in signal engineering, including SSI/CBTC/PTC projects.
- Proven ability to work with Solid State Interlocking systems (e.g., SSI, Microlok, Westrace etc.).
- Familiarity with U.S. rail standards: AREMA, FRA, IEEE 1474.1, and NIST 800-82 (for OT system awareness).
- Understanding of relay logic and hybrid signaling systems (relay + digital).
Desired Skills/ Knowledge
- Experience with MTA, LIRR, NYCT, PATH, or other North American rail transit operators.
- Familiarity with testing and commissioning procedures for SSI-based interlockings.
- Knowledge of CAD software and configuration tools used in signal design.
- EIT or PE license (preferred but not required).
- Safety assurance or ISA documentation experience is a plus.
